Water powered race cars are not a figment of the imagination, they have been known to run using hydrogen and oxygen as a means for power. In 2006, Danny Klein invented a fuel cell that was able to split the properties of water and separate the hydrogen from the oxygen, racing his water car against a Lamborghini. Although water powered race cars may be viable, this technology has not yet made its way to the public via mainstream automobile manufacturers. The water powered race cars, however, are being studied as a prototype for cars marketed to the general public as a way to save on fuel. With the ever growing need for alternative fuel for cars, the water powered race cars can be an indication of things to come.
